Simple Driving Tips to Save Money at the Pump
Fuel prices just keep going up and it’s a necessary expense if you drive a car, but the type of car you drive and the way you drive it can both affect how much fuel you use.
When you reduce your fuel consumption, you’re not only saving money, but you’re helping the environment by reducing greenhouse gas emissions which contribute to global warming.
With these simple changes, you can cut down on the number of times you visit the pump and feel good about helping the planet.
When you want to accelerate, do it gently and slowly until you reach the speed limit. Stomping on the pedal only uses more fuel than necessary and doesn’t get you there any quicker.
The same goes for braking. When you want to slow down, take your foot off the accelerator and let the car coast until you need to brake, and then do so gently until you’ve slowed enough or stopped.
Always use the right gear and don’t speed unnecessarily as it creates wind resistance and uses more fuel. Remove roof racks and bike racks if you’re not using them for better aerodynamics.
You should also try to avoid driving in rush hour so you’re not continually stopping and starting and wasting fuel while waiting in traffic.
Keep your vehicle well maintained and check tyre pressure regularly. A properly serviced and tuned car improves fuel economy, as do correctly inflated tyres and using the right type of fuel for your vehicle.
Choose a vehicle best suited to your lifestyle. If you spend most of your time driving in the city, it doesn’t make sense to own a large touring vehicle.
At certain times of the year, air conditioning is necessary, but did you know it can increase your fuel consumption by as much as 20%? Use the recirculate option to minimise the work your car air conditioning has to do to keep the cab cool.
Lighten the Load
Don’t carry unnecessary weight in your car. The less your vehicle weighs, the less fuel it will use. This is one more reason for choosing a vehicle that suits your lifestyle.
If you are transporting heavy items, try to distribute the load evenly and adjust your tyre pressure for better fuel economy.
