What to Look for When You're Test Driving a Car
When you’re buying a car, either new or used, one of the most important things you should do is take it for a test drive.
Driving your potential new vehicle for the first time isn’t just to find out if you really like it. You should also check for other things like strange noises and vibrations, especially in the case of pre-owned vehicles, and how it handles in different driving conditions.
Take a long drive to really get a feel for the car and have a checklist prepared to keep you on track.
Before You Go
Before you test drive any car, check all the conditions in the agreement to see if you might be liable for any damage you cause to the vehicle. Read all the fine print before you sign anything.
Do Your Research
Do some research on the make and model of the car you like and compile a checklist.
If it’s been a while since you bought a new car, do some research on the latest technology and features available, and ask yourself if you really want to pay for things you may never use.
Does it Fit Your Lifestyle?
Is the car easy to get in and out of? Easy to park? Does it have enough space for everything you want to carry?
What about fuel efficiency and power? Is it suitable for your needs and cheap to run? What sort of fuel does it use?
Take it the vehicle out on the highway and put it through its paces to see how you like it. If you’re used to driving a small car, you might not like the feel of larger, more powerful vehicle.
Try it in different driving conditions and road surfaces to see how it handles. What about the seats? Are they comfortable? Can you adjust everything in the car to suit you?
If you’re thinking of buying a pre-owned vehicle, the test drive is even more crucial.
A mechanically minded friend should accompany you, if you have one. While you’re driving, check the brakes, steering, suspension, exhaust when you accelerate, engine for knocks and rattles, and transmission.
Before you get into the vehicle, check for dents, scratches and rust, as well as any puddles of fluid under the car such as oil, coolant, or transmission fluid.
Check the condition of the interior for tears and rips, or stains on the seats and carpet, or missing pieces.
Lastly, check that the lights, indicators, wipers, and other features and technology such as satellite navigation, air conditioning and stereo all work properly.
It’s also a good idea to have a qualified mechanic check the vehicle to find what you might have missed.
