The History of Honda
The History of Honda
The history of Honda dates back to Japan in 1948; almost 70 years ago when Soichiro Honda established Honda Motor Co. In 1949 Takeo Fujisawa joined Honda Motor as Managing Director and the two would be partners for life.
Soichiro Honda's interest in automobiles and motorcycles was not new when Honda Motors was established. Soichiro Honda spent his early years working as a mechanic, where he would tune cars and enter them into races. It was this passion that lead his ambitious spirit and saw him work to build his own manufacturer in 1948.
Many recognise Honda as a reputable automotive brand with a track record of reliability, practicality and style. What many may not realise is the rich history and diverse achievements of the Honda brand.
From the day Takeo Fukisawa joined Soichiro Honda, the two set out to be the world's top motorcycle manufacturers. This was achieved through the sale of the Super Cub C100 in August 1958, their participation in the Isle of Man TT Race in June 1959, and the opening of Suzuka Factory in April 1960. Honda still continues to be the world's largest manufacturer of motorcycles globally. The 1960's saw Honda break out of the Japanese market and into the US. By the end of 1963, Honda had sold 90,000 motorcycles.
The first production automobile from Honda was the T360 mini pick-up truck, which went on sale in August 1963 to the Japanese market. The next few decades saw Honda expand its product line, operations and exports to numerous countries around the world. 1986 saw Honda introduce the Acura, a luxury vehicle, successfully into the American market. This was Honda's attempt to position themselves in the luxury vehicle market; and it worked.
A long-held Honda tradition is the employment of front wheel drive powertrain implementation. Honda has always had a desire to be first to install new technologies and features to their automobiles as a standard.
In December 2016, Honda celebrated their 100 million-unit milestone of automobiles sold since their automobile production began in 1963.
Honda's Many Passions
You may not realise that Honda does not only manufactures motorcycles and automobiles, the group also manufacture garden equipment, marine engines, personal watercraft and power generators, and even invest in the development of artificial intelligence and robotics. Honda has also ventured into aerospace with the establishment of GE Honda Aero Engines in 2004, and the Honda HA-420 HondaJet, which began production in 2012.
